Resource.1

From Quake Wiki

Resource.1 is a generic name usually given to the first or only part of a multi-part LZH-encoded archive (that is, an LHA file), which is similar to a ZIP or RAR archive. In relation to Quake, a Resource.1 file comes inside quake106.zip, the official shareware distribution of Quake 1.06. Inside this Resource.1 are the following files:

  • QUAKE.EXE – the DOS Quake engine.
  • QLAUNCH.EXE – a DOS-based launcher for QUAKE.EXE to enable playing over TCP/IP (this was before QuakeWorld was an option).
  • Q95.BAT – a shell script to help invoke QLAUNCH.EXE.
  • CWSDPMI.EXE, GENVXD.DLL, MGENVXD.VXD, PDIPX.COM, QUAKEUDP.DLL – support files required by QUAKE.EXE for memory management & networking.
  • HELP.TXT, LICINFO.TXT, ORDER.TXT, README.TXT, READV106.TXT, SLICNSE.TXT, TECHINFO.TXT – documentation.
  • ID1\PAK0.PAK – maps, models, programs, sounds, skins required to play Episode 1 or to use any other Quake engine.

These files are compressed with the "-lh5-" algorithm, which was common in 1996 but is something not all LHA/LZH decompressors can handle nowadays.
