Editing Quake Wiki:Policies and guidelines

We generally follow the same conventions as Wikipedia, so if you're familiar with those you're all set. When in doubt, just use common sense.

== Spelling ==
Don't worry about American/Everyone-else spelling conventions (colour/color and that sort of thing) too much, as long as you don't mix them in the same sentence!

== Article titles ==
Only the first word and proper nouns in an article title should be capitalized (not that MediaWiki gives you a choice with the first word).

Good:
* [[Singleplayer maps]]
* [[Customizing Quake]]
Bad:
* Singleplayer Maps
* Config Files
(Unfortunately a lot of cleanup still needs to be done in this area.)

=== Console variables ===
By default, MediaWiki capitalizes the first letter in an article title, and treats underscores as spaces. This means articles on console variables will have really ugly titles, such as "[[Cl name]]" for "cl_name". For these articles, include the text <tt><nowiki>{{lowercase-underscores}}</nowiki></tt> at the beginning of the article (see [[sv_gravity]] for an example). The URL will still have a initial capital letter, but that's not too bad.
: I tried copying the template:lowercase from Wikipedia to see if it would function here but while it doesn't break anything it doesn't change the capital letters to lowercase (for the first letter only, see [[id Software]] for example) like it does for Wikipedia. :: It's possible to use <tt><nowiki>{{DISPLAYNAME:func_door}}</nowiki></tt>to fix titles quite nicely. I've tried it on a couple of articles in the Entity Guide. See [[func_button]]. However, a proper working template would be better I guess. ([[User:Than|Than]]... sorry for not adding this note properly. wiki editing is confusing.)

=== Categories ===
I've been adding categories hither and yon and seem to have discovered an issue with MediaWiki. Looking at [[Special:Categories]] shows there's some kind of issue with the categories being repeatedly listed as it finds items for it or something. I found [http://www.mwusers.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-8671.html this help request] online that seems to be related, but the version reported here appears to be higher than that. === Templates being used/made ===
I added a template for creation of an automatic To-Do list as well as a reminder. To use it simply insert <nowiki>{{todo}}</nowiki> into an article's talk page (preferably the talk page anyway). You can optionally specify a user (yourself) and a reminder of what to do. A full example would be <nowiki>{{todo|user=[[Hectate]]|todo=Figure out what other templates we need}}</nowiki>.
