Quake Wiki:Policies and guidelines

From Quake Wiki

Revision as of 17:02, 25 March 2013 by Spirit (talk | contribs) (Console variables: note about ancient paragraph)

We generally follow the same conventions as Wikipedia, so if you're familiar with those you're all set. When in doubt, just use common sense.

Spelling

Don't worry about American/Everyone-else spelling conventions (colour/color and that sort of thing) too much, as long as you don't mix them in the same sentence!

Article titles

Only the first word and proper nouns in an article title should be capitalized (not that MediaWiki gives you a choice with the first word).

Good:

Bad:

  • Singleplayer Maps
  • Config Files

(Unfortunately a lot of cleanup still needs to be done in this area.)

Console variables

By default, MediaWiki capitalizes the first letter in an article title, and treats underscores as spaces. This means articles on console variables will have really ugly titles, such as "Cl name" for "cl_name". For these articles, include the text {{lowercase-underscores}} at the beginning of the article (see sv_gravity for an example). The URL will still have a initial capital letter, but that's not too bad.

I tried copying the template:lowercase from Wikipedia to see if it would function here but while it doesn't break anything it doesn't change the capital letters to lowercase (for the first letter only, see id Software for example) like it does for Wikipedia. Not sure why... --Hectate (talk) 01:18, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
If you read anything, check the date. This paragraph above was from 2009. I have setup this wiki to not force uppercase for the first character so it should work better. Spirit (talk) 15:02, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
It's possible to use {{DISPLAYNAME:func_door}}to fix titles quite nicely. I've tried it on a couple of articles in the Entity Guide. See func_button. However, a proper working template would be better I guess. (Than... sorry for not adding this note properly. wiki editing is confusing.)
Yeah I saw your message - it's looking good. Also, after I replied I saw the table you had implemented in the func_button and it looks great. That's a much better implementation than just a standard * list. --Hectate (talk) 14:51, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

Categories

I've been adding categories hither and yon and seem to have discovered an issue with MediaWiki. Looking at Special:Categories shows there's some kind of issue with the categories being repeatedly listed as it finds items for it or something. I found this help request online that seems to be related, but the version reported here appears to be higher than that. I'm not sure what he issue is though. Also, it appears we no longer have a direct place for reporting wiki bugs? --Hectate (talk) 02:47, 25 March 2013 (UTC)
