The shotgun (sometimes referred to as the boomstick) is the weapon you start with. It is not very powerful but remains useful throughout the singleplayer campaign for hitting monsters (such as Scrags) at long range, when a slow-moving projectile won't do. For close-range combat its use is completely eclipsed once you pick up the Double-Barrelled Shotgun, which is more efficient in both damage over time and damage per shell used (but has a wider spread).
The basic weapon, to which all other weapons compare favourably.

You start with this weapon and end with this weapon, and it is never used much. Firing it uses up 1 Shell. You will use it in the base levels, before you find more powerful weapons, and occasionally later on, mostly for hitting monsters at long range when you have run out of (or don't want to waste) Nails and Rockets.
