The Lightning gun, Thunderbolt or Shaft is only available in the registered version of quake. It fires a short-ranged bolt of lightning similar to the Shambler's attack. Don't fire it under water, or it will explode, killing you and anyone else in the water nearby. (Unless, of course, you have the Pentagram of Protection. Try it on dm3 sometime. It's great fun.)

Note: the thunderbolt underwater effect does damage in a radius around the player, and doesn't actually check to see if targets are also underwater, so you can actually kill people out of the water with this attack.
