This cvar was added by id Software for temporary data storage and/or as a debugging code. In Quake, setting this variable will override the random choice of player death animation when you are killed. What's amusing is that the default code generates a number in the 1-6 range, so the last player death sequence, player_diee1, is picked twice as often as any other.
The only place where behaviour is specified for this variable is in the QuakeC code, so if you want to use it for something else, you're free to.
